Soul Urge number
The Soul Urge number
The vowels in your first name, added and reduced. Also called the Heart's Desire. It describes what actually motivates you, underneath the reasons you give.
What a Soul Urge number is
A Soul Urge number is derived from the vowels in your first name, and only the vowels. Each one is converted to its English Ordinal Gematria value, which is simply its position in the alphabet, the values are added, and the total is reduced to a single digit, or to 11, 22 or 33.
Also called Heart's Desire. What actually motivates you, underneath the reasons you give other people. Often private, often the truest one.
The traditional reasoning for using the vowels is worth stating plainly, because it is the only justification there is: vowels are the sounds you cannot form a name without, the part that carries the voice rather than the shape. Numerology treats them as the interior of the name and the consonants as its exterior. That is an aesthetic argument rather than a proof, and you should take it as one.
The Y rule, stated exactly
Y is the only letter that changes sides, and this is where most hand calculations go wrong. Y counts as a vowel only when your first name contains no A, E, I, O or U at all. If any of those five is present, the Y is a consonant.
So LYNN gets a vowel Y, because there is nothing else in the name to carry the sound. MARY does not, because of the A. BYRD gets one; YVONNE does not, because of the O and the E. It is one decision made once, over the whole first name.
The English Ordinal Gematria letter values
The same chart every name-derived number on this site uses. Each letter is worth its position in the alphabet, A at 1 through to Z at 26. For a Soul Urge you only need the five vowels and sometimes the Y, but the whole chart is here because you will want it for the other two numbers.

How to calculate your Soul Urge number
- Write out your first name. The middle name and the surname are not used.
- Mark A, E, I, O and U as vowels. Mark the Y as a vowel only if your first name contains none of those five.
- Convert each marked vowel to its value from the chart above and add them together.
- Reduce the total by adding its digits, and keep reducing until one digit is left. Stop on 11, 22 or 33 if the chain lands there: those are master numbers and are never reduced further.
A worked example
Lynn again, this time counting vowels only. The struck-through letters are the ones this number ignores. Every value is computed by the same functions the calculator uses.
Worked example: Soul Urge for the first name Lynn
Lynn
- L 12
- Y 25
- N 14
- N 14
Lynn contributes 25. The Y counts here, because it is acting as a vowel: this name has no other vowel to carry the sound.
Struck-through letters are the ones this particular number ignores.
- Total = 25
- 2 + 5 = 7
Soul Urge = 7.
The vowel total is 25, and 2 + 5 is 7, so the Soul Urge is 7. The whole of that total is the Y, because Lynn has no A, E, I, O or U in it. Read the Y as a consonant instead and there is no vowel left to count, which is a plain illustration of how much rides on that one rule.

One line per value, the same lines the calculator returns. Each row links to that number's Life Path page, where the character of the digit is set out in full. A Soul Urge 8 is not a Life Path 8, but the 8 in both means the same thing.
