Personality number
The Personality number
The consonants in your first name, added and reduced. It describes the version of you that arrives before you do.
What a Personality number is
A Personality number is derived from the consonants in your first name, and only the consonants. Each is converted to its English Ordinal Gematria value, which is simply its position in the alphabet, the values are added, and the total is reduced to a single digit, or to 11, 22 or 33.
The version of you that arrives before you do. How strangers read you in the first ten minutes, which is rarely how you read yourself.
It is the most externally facing of the five core numbers. The Life Path is your terrain, the Expression is your equipment, the Soul Urge is your motive, and the Personality is the impression that gets to the room ahead of all three. It is also the one most likely to feel wrong when you first read it, because almost nobody's self-image matches their first impression.
Which letters count, and the Y problem
Every letter of your first name that is not acting as a vowel. In practice that means everything except A, E, I, O and U, plus the Y in some names and not others.
The rule for Y is the same one the Soul Urge uses, applied in reverse: Y acts as a vowel only when the first name contains no A, E, I, O or U at all. So in MARY the Y is a consonant and counts here, because of the A. In LYNN it is a vowel and does not count here, because there is nothing else in the name to carry the sound.
The English Ordinal Gematria letter values
The same chart used by every name-derived number on this site. A letter is worth its position in the alphabet: A is 1, I is 9, J is 10, S is 19, and Z is 26. Nothing restarts along the way.

How to calculate your Personality number
- Write out your first name. The middle name and the surname are not used.
- Mark the vowels: A, E, I, O, U, plus the Y if your first name has none of those five in it.
- Everything left over is a consonant. Convert each of those to its value from the chart above and add them together.
- Reduce the total by adding its digits, and keep reducing until one digit is left, stopping if the chain lands on 11, 22 or 33.
A worked example
Lynn, counting consonants only. The struck-through letters are the vowels this number ignores. Every value is computed by the same functions the calculator uses.
Worked example: Personality for the first name Lynn
Lynn
- L 12
- Y 25
- N 14
- N 14
Lynn contributes 40. The Y is left out here, because it is acting as a vowel: this name has no other vowel to carry the sound.
Struck-through letters are the ones this particular number ignores.
- Total = 40
- 4 + 0 = 4
Personality = 4.
The consonant total is 40, and 4 + 0 is 4, so the Personality number is 4. Add that raw 40 to the raw vowel total of 25 and you get 65, which is exactly the total behind the Expression number for the same name. That is the check worth doing if you are working by hand.
