What an Expression number is
An Expression number is derived from every letter of your first name. Each letter is converted to a number using English Ordinal Gematria, the values are added together, and the total is reduced to a single digit, or to 11, 22 or 33.

Where the Life Path describes the terrain you are walking, the Expression describes the equipment you brought to it. It is the number numerology reads as capability: aptitude, method, the way you go at things rather than what keeps happening to you.
Which name to use
Your first name, spelled the way it was given to you. Not a shortened form, not a nickname, not the name on your email signature. The middle name and the surname are not part of this calculation at all, so leaving them out is not an omission, it is the method.
That is narrower than some other calculators, and it is a deliberate choice rather than a simplification. The numerologist this site follows works from the given name alone, on the reasoning that it is the name that gets used, said aloud and answered to. A surname is inherited and a middle name is often never spoken. Whether you find that convincing is up to you, but the calculation is only meaningful if everyone does it the same way, so this is the version we use.
The practical consequence is worth stating: if you have seen an Expression number for yourself on another site, it will probably not match the one here. That is a difference of method, not an error in either place.
The English Ordinal Gematria letter values
Twenty-six letters, twenty-six values. A letter is worth its position in the alphabet and nothing else: A is 1, B is 2, M is 13, Z is 26. The count runs straight through and never restarts, which means no two letters share a value and there is no cycle to keep track of.

English Ordinal Gematria. The values run from 1 to 26. Every letter has its own value and the count never restarts, so read the number printed beside a letter rather than counting in nines.
How to calculate your Expression number
- Write out your first name, spelled the way it was given to you. The middle name and the surname are not used.
- Convert every letter to its value from the chart above.
- Add all of those values together in one pass.
- Reduce the total by adding its digits together, and keep reducing until a single digit is left. If you land on 11, 22 or 33 at any point in that chain, stop there: those are master numbers and they are not reduced further.
